Winter Word Sort: Open and Closed Syllables #1

Provide students with word study practice during the winter season using this engaging open and closed syllable sort! Words are made up of syllables, and two kinds of syllables are closed and open. A closed syllable has one vowel, ends with a consonant, and usually has a short vowel sound. An open syllable ends with one vowel, and it usually has a long vowel sound. This grammar worksheet invites learners to sort open- and closed-syllable words by coloring them different colors. Students will review the words in the mittens, coloring the words with an open syllable blue, and coloring the words with a closed syllable orange.

Geared toward first-grade learners, this word sort is a fun way to prepare students to predict which vowel sound to use when decoding unfamiliar multisyllabic words. This skill will help students correctly spell words and improve reading fluency!
