Vocabulary Toolkit: Vocabulary Quilt

Encourage students to make connections as they learn new words with this vocabulary quilt activity! Adaptable to a variety of units, this creative vocabulary-building exercise gets students thinking about the meaning of a vocabulary term in the context of related words and ideas. Using the template on page 2, students will create a vocabulary quilt square that includes their word, its definition, a related sketch, a synonym or example, an antonym or non-example, and any other connections to the word that seem important.

Use this worksheet as part of your vocabulary lesson for a novel study, a history or science unit, standardized test prep, or something else! Cut out students' squares and hang them together to create a unique display for your classroom or school that also serves to expose students to important academic vocabulary.
