Vocabulary Toolkit: Vocabulary Connections Map

Encourage students to make connections as they learn new vocabulary with this Vocabulary Connections Map! One of the best ways to remember new information is by building connections in the brain. This works with vocabulary, too! Adaptable to a wide range of subjects, this creative vocabulary exercise gets students thinking about the meaning of a vocabulary term in the context of related words and ideas. Using the instructions and example on page 1 and the templates on pages 2 and 3, students will create their own vocabulary connections maps by writing their vocabulary word in the center of the map and then adding words or phrases and drawing lines to show how they connect.

Explicit vocabulary instruction and tools such as this are a great way to support English Language Learners and students needing additional vocabulary development. This graphic organizer is intentionally flexible to best support instruction in a middle school classroom or at home.
