The Two Sounds of EA

Get ready to practice ea sounds with this first- and second-grade phonics worksheet! A digraph is when two letters make one sound. For example, ea can make a long sound, like in leaf, or a short sound, like in bread. This worksheet will introduce students to words that use both sounds of ea, and learners must determine which sound is correct for each word. Then, young readers will identify ea words in a sentence and draw a picture to match.

This phonics activity will build students’ knowledge of vowel teams and their different pronunciations. Learners can also begin to recognize the patterns and sounds of the ea digraph, helping them to become stronger readers.
