Sentence Sort: Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences #1

What are the differences between simple, compound, and complex sentences? Learn how to tell sentence types apart in this informative worksheet! Definitions and examples show students what each sentence type is: simple sentences just have one independent clause, compound sentences have two independent clauses, and complex sentences have one independent and one dependent clause. After reading the explanation, students will identify which of the three types each of ten sentences is.

Designed for fourth and fifth graders, this worksheet will give students practice not only with identifying sentence types, but also with recognizing independent and dependent clauses. Understanding how clauses and conjunctions form different sentence types is an important skill as students broaden their writing skills.
