Recipe for Strong Writing: Combining Sentences

Cook up efficient, engaging sentences with the help of this writing worksheet! In each of six questions, students will be asked to read a pair of simple sentences that share a subject or predicate, then rewrite them into a single sentence that combines the information in both. A challenge question asks students to combine two sentences that share neither a subject nor a predicate.

Designed for third graders, this worksheet offers students great practice writing sentences that efficiently combine multiple pieces of information. Young writers can work on the skill of using “and” to connect multiple subjects and predicates, developing their ability to edit their writing and intentionally craft sentences that provide necessary information without being repetitive.
