Recipe for Great Writing: Spice Up Your Verbs

Welcome to the kitchen, chefs! Let’s see if you can whip up a tasty piece of writing that’s full of delicious verbs! In part one of this worksheet, learners will be asked to choose which of two potential verbs is the strongest and adds the most zest to each sentence. In part two, students will come up with their own flavorful verbs to replace the weak verbs in the sentences.

This worksheet was designed for third, fourth, and fifth graders. It’s a great resource for showing students that they have many different options when they are deciding which words to use in their own writing. As they practice, students can practice revising bland writing and learn that their choice of words can affect the meaning of their sentences.

Learn about more words you can use to improve your writing with Shades of Meaning: Word Strength and Shades of Meaning: Matching.
