Reading and Writing Chemical Equations

Learn the language of chemistry by reading and writing chemical equations! Middle-grade students will first learn how chemical reactions can be described. Then, in part one, students will write a sentence to describe each of three chemical equations. In part two, learners will write the chemical equations that are described by two different sentences.

Chemical equations are key to communicating what happens during a chemical reaction. By reading a chemical equation, scientists can understand what substances are involved and how they change during the reaction. Later on, learners can also use chemical equations to predict the products of a chemical reaction.
