Read and Draw: R-Controlled Vowels

Channel your inner artist in this first- and second-grade phonics activity! R-controlled vowel words, or “bossy r” words, are words that contain the letter combinations ar, er, ir, or, or ur. For each sentence, young readers will underline r-controlled vowel words, then draw a picture to reflect the scenario.

Reading words with complex letter patterns in context will help students become stronger and more independent readers. As learners draw each sentence, they will be motivated to understand what they’re reading, therefore building reading comprehension skills alongside phonics knowledge.
