Phonemic Awareness: Middle Sounds

Try isolating short vowel sounds in this early phonics worksheet! This worksheet consists of 10 CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that an adult can read aloud. Students will need to identify the middle sound they heard in each of the words. If they get it right, you'll write a check mark; if they get it wrong, you can record the sound on the line instead.

This worksheet is intended for first graders learning about simple CVC words and the vowel sounds that are common in English. Having students think about the different vowel sounds they hear can prepare them to learn about more advanced phonics concepts, like diphthongs and digraphs.
