Oxymorons: Opposites That Go Together

After completing this worksheet, you’ll know oxymorons inside out! Learners will first choose the oxymorons from eight pairs of phrases, keeping in mind that oxymorons are two or more words with opposite meanings. In the second part of this worksheet, students will choose which of two words creates an oxymoron in each of four sentences.

Intended for fourth and fifth graders, this worksheet is a great choice for teaching students about the literary device of oxymorons. Students will learn to both identify and build oxymorons, which can help them build their vocabulary and understand the creative possibilities of language. Learners can use oxymorons in their own work to create more descriptive, playful writing!
