Worksheet
Open and Closed Syllables
Sort syllables in this spectacular first-grade worksheet! Learners can first read the introduction that tells them about the difference between an open syllable and a closed syllable. Then, they will be asked to sort 18 single-syllable words based on the type of syllable each one is.
Use this worksheet to help students understand the different types of syllables and how each type tends to sound. A strong base of knowledge in open and closed single-syllable words can support students as they learn to read and spell multi-syllabic words. Learners will also practice reading short words and determining which have short vowel sounds and which have long vowel sounds.
More syllable practice can be found here: Syllable Sort: Cut and Paste #1, Syllable Chop: Closed Syllables, and Syllable Chop: Open Syllables.
