Novel Study: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry: Exploring Symbols

After finishing Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, give students a chance to think about the significance of some of the symbols used in the novel. In this extension activity, students are asked to examine some key symbols from the novel and consider the deeper meaning they bring to the story. Students are provided an example that explains how land is a symbol of independence for the Logan family. Then, learners will choose three symbols from a list and analyze their significance in the story.
