Novel Study: Holes: Post-Reading Response Prompts

Use these thought-provoking prompts to reflect on the plot, characters, and themes in Louis Sachar’s Holes! This worksheet includes 10 prompts that cover a variety of topics and ask students to describe their understanding of big ideas in the text. For example, one prompt asks students to tell about the purpose of each of the three sections of the book, another has students describe examples of justice and injustice in the story, and yet another requires students to summarize how Stanley and Zero’s friendship changes from beginning to end. In this worksheet, students are asked to choose five of the prompts and then respond to them. Learners can use the back of this worksheet or another sheet of lined paper to write their responses. Use these prompts to check students’ comprehension of the story and their ability to analyze big-picture themes and character development. This worksheet is part of a novel study of Louis Sachar’s Holes that is designed for fourth through sixth graders.
