Novel Study: A Long Walk to Water: The Five Senses in the Akobo

After reading Linda Sue Park's novel A Long Walk to Water, give students an opportunity to engage with the book and their senses in this poetry-based extension activity! Designed for seventh- and eighth-grade learners, this worksheet asks students to write a poem from Salva’s point of view describing the three-day journey through the Akobo Desert. They will need to use vivid sensory language, describing the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and physical sensations of walking through the desert. Click “View answer key” to see a rubric for grading students’ poems.
