Methods of Charging Part 3: Charging by Induction

How does lightning form, and why does it strike trees and other objects on the ground? Find out in this informative two-page worksheet! Learners will read a passage that explains how the lower portion of large clouds gain a negative charge and cause objects on the ground to gain a positive charge through charging by induction. They’ll see how this induced difference in charge causes negative charges to move from cloud to earth in the form of lightning. Then, students will answer questions that prompt them to explain aspects of what they learned and extrapolate from important concepts.

This science worksheet is intended for middle schoolers who are learning about electricity and positive and negative charges. Learners will not only build on their existing knowledge of charges, but they will also practice the vital skill of comprehending scientific and informational texts.
