Long & Short Vowel Check-in

Long or short? You decide! This assessment worksheet helps second graders and young readers practice their vowels and letter sounds. It also helps teachers assess their students’ progress.

Students read 12 words with accompanying pictures and sort them into one of two columns: words with a long vowel sound or words with a short vowel sound. Teachers can use this worksheet as a check-in and tool to assess student understanding of common spelling patterns for vowel sounds.
