Worksheet
How to Write a Haiku
Haikus are Japanese poems that describe nature. While poetry can be intimidating to some students, haikus are unique because they are structed, which can make them more appealing to apprehensive poets. Haikus have a 5-7-5 form, designating the number of syllables in each line. Designed for fifth-grade students, this worksheets makes a great introduction to writing haikus. It provides an example of a completed haiku, provides a half-completed haiku for students to try their hand at, and then allows the student to flourish in the end by writing their own. With clear directions and scaffolding, students will be proud poets in no time!
