Halloween Homologies: Spooky Skeletal Similarities
What do a raven, a bat, and a wolf have in common? Similar skeletal structures! In this seasonal worksheet, middle-grade students will explore homologous structures in multiple animals as evidence of evolutionary relationships. After reading an introduction that will introduce learners to key terms and concepts, students will apply their knowledge to color in three skeletal diagrams. These simplified diagrams show the forelimbs of three Halloween-themed animals—a raven, a bat, and a wolf! Young scientists will then compare each diagram and identify structures that are both homologous and analogous.
This one-page worksheet will help students sharpen their critical thinking skills as they use evidence to draw conclusions. Learners will also practice labeling, reading, and comparing diagrams.
