Estimating Measurements: Nonstandard Units

Use a paperclip “ruler” to measure common objects in this colorful worksheet! Learners will first cut out the ruler at the bottom of the page. Then, they will use the ruler to help them estimate the length of six different items in paperclip units, making sure to properly line up the ruler and the object to produce an accurate measurement. 

This worksheet is perfect for first graders learning the rules of measurement and how to use tools for measuring length. Instead of starting with the abstract units of inches and centimeters, the paperclip ruler introduces students to measurement using a familiar object. This practice can prepare students to use real rulers!
