Worksheet

Choose the Irrelevant Detail

Keep your writing from getting off track with this worksheet about irrelevant details! In each question, students will read a topic sentence, then read three additional sentences. Writers must choose which option is least relevant to the topic sentence. Then, learners will show off their knowledge by writing their own supporting sentence.

As third and fourth graders begin to write paragraphs, it’s important that they keep sentences relevant to the topic. Writing is made more effective and engaging when the sentences all relate to the subject or theme. By learning to differentiate relevant and irrelevant details, students can become stronger writers and editors!
