Worksheet
Bossy R: Write the Room
Search for r-controlled vowels around the room with this interactive worksheet! Students will move around the room to find words containing r-controlled vowels. As they find the clues, learners will sort the words into ar words, or words, and ir/ur/er words. To set up for this activity, an adult will need to post the clue cards on the second page in different locations around the room. Each student will receive a copy of the worksheet on the first page, but the clue cards only need to be printed once. The cards can be laminated for repeated use if desired.
This activity helps first and second graders recognize the different sounds that r-controlled vowels make. Knowing how a “bossy r” changes the sound of a vowel can help students become better readers, writers, and spellers. This movement-focused lesson will keep students engaged and introduce a new way to learn!
