Then Came One

Help students use a 100 chart while discovering patterns of one more. This fun lesson will help students find connects between numbers and gain fluency with numbers within 100.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to articulate patterns of one more.

Introduction

(10 minutes)
  • Show the hundreds chart to students.
  • Ask students to turn to a partner and share one thing they notice about the numbers on the chart. Encourage students to look for patterns.
  • After sharing with a partner, have students come back together to share some of their observations.

Beginning

  • Define a pattern as something that repeats. Provide examples of movement patterns (e.g. snap clap snap clap) or visual patterns in the classroom.

Intermediate

  • Provide the sentence frame, "I noticed ________" for use during the partner share.
  • List student observations on the board.
