Storytelling: Identifying Elements in Wonderland

In this lesson, your students will be taken into wonderland by reading familiar stories such as The Ugly Duckling. Your students will identify characters, setting, and main events in these stories.

Every story is different! But all of them have important details to help readers imagine a story’s events and characters. Perfect for first graders, the lesson Storytelling: Identifying Elements in Wonderland starts with asking students to share a story of their own. Then they will have to answer questions that highlight details in their story. Where did the story take place? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end? After that, students will continue to think about character, setting, and events in fiction texts as they work on a variety of fiction comprehension worksheets.

Introduction

(10 minutes)

Ask students to tell you a narrative style story that involved them or one they heard. For example, have them tell you a story about what they did after school yesterday.
After the student is done telling the story, ask other students to identify the people in the story. Potential questions include: Where did it take place? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
