Leafy Numbers
In this leafy, plant-themed lesson, students will use leaves as they practice recognizing various numbers from 1 to 15. This lesson can be easily adapted for use with specific ranges of numbers.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to write, recognize, and count numbers from 1 to 15.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Have the students sit in a circle, and show them the brown bag that has the leaves inside.
- Invite them to guess what is inside the bag.
- Shake the bag so they can hear the sounds, and go around the circle, allowing them to feel what is inside.
- After the students have guessed, pour the leaves out in the middle of the circle, inside a hula hoop or circular piece of string.
- Tell the students that today they will be working on finding the total number of leaves on their own trees.
Beginning
- Read aloud a book about trees and leaves to familiarize students with the lesson concept.
- Ask students to give a thumbs up if they have ever seen leaves before.
Intermediate
- Show the students pictures of tress with leaves and ask them to turn and talk to share what they see with a partner.
- Display the leaves from the bag and have students use the following sentence starter to describe the leaves, "The leaf is ________."
