Learning Objectives

Students will be able to use the length-times-width strategy to solve rectangular area problems in real-world contexts.

Introduction

(5 minutes)
  • Hold up a flat hand to the class and place a rectangular piece of paper over it that nearly covers its area.
  • Explain how the rectangle’s area, the amount of space it takes up is approximate, or almost, the area of your hand.
  • Ask the class, “What do you know about area?” and take student responses.
