Get ready to have some fun with the short “u” sound in this lesson plan designed for first grade learners. First, children explore how the short “u” sound can appear at either the beginning of a word (such as “umbrella”) or the middle of a word (such as “bus”). Then learners will practice reading various short “u” words, matching them to their corresponding pictures, and identifying where in the word they hear the “u” sound. This letter-sound relationship is further explored as children complete two colorful worksheets featuring the short “u” sound.
