Fact or Opinion: Part 1
Cats are the best! Pizza is better! My teacher rules! In Fact or Opinion: Part 1, your students will combine reading and writing to learn about the differences between facts and opinions and how those differences are communicated.

Introduction
(5 minutes)- Tell the students that today they are going to learn about facts, true statements, and opinions, which are personal views or attitudes that might change.
- Activate prior knowledge by asking questions. For example: What is a fact? What is an opinion?
- Have students write the words fact and opinion and copy down the definitions onto a piece of loose leaf paper.
Beginning: Have ELs tell a partner the definitions of fact and opinion, either in English or their home language (L1). If needed, provide the following sentence stems: "A fact is ________." "An opinion is ________."
Intermediate: Have ELs tell a partner the definitions of fact and opinion.
