Fact or Opinion: Part 1

Cats are the best! Pizza is better! My teacher rules! In Fact or Opinion: Part 1, your students will combine reading and writing to learn about the differences between facts and opinions and how those differences are communicated.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to distinguish facts and opinions.

Introduction

(5 minutes)
  • Tell the students that today they are going to learn about facts, true statements, and opinions, which are personal views or attitudes that might change.
  • Activate prior knowledge by asking questions. For example: What is a fact? What is an opinion?
  • Have students write the words fact and opinion and copy down the definitions onto a piece of loose leaf paper.

Beginning: Have ELs tell a partner the definitions of fact and opinion, either in English or their home language (L1). If needed, provide the following sentence stems: "A fact is ________." "An opinion is ________."

Intermediate: Have ELs tell a partner the definitions of fact and opinion.
