Learning Objectives

  • Students will divide decimal numbers by powers of 10 and explain decimal placement patterns in the quotient.

Introduction

(5 minutes)
  • Show your students the following problem 37.5 ÷ 102.
  • Have your students brainstorm any details they understand about the expression and note their answers on a chart paper.
  • Read the learning objective aloud to the class.

Beginning

  • Allow students to use their home language (L1) or new language (L2) in their discussions and then say their ideas so you can add them to the chart paper in their L2.
  • Give students whiteboards to help them jot down notes during the whole-group brainstorming session. Allow students to write it in their L2 if they are fluent in the language.
  • Have students choral read the language objective with you.

Intermediate

  • Provide the following sentence starters for their discussions in their L1:
    • "I notice..."
    • "The expression has..."
    • "There are..."
    • "I know it's a ________ because ________."
    • "I think the quotient will be..."
  • Ask students to restate the way to say 37.5 ÷102: "thirty-five and five-tenths divided by 10 to the second power."
  • Write the academic language they can use throughout the lesson on the board as you introduce the language.
