Counting and Adding: Penny For Your Thoughts

Get students familiar with money by counting the lowest denomination of currency: the penny! This is a great way to reinforce consecutive numbers and addition lessons.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to recognize a penny, know its value, and add any amount of pennies together.

Introduction

(10 minutes)
  • Call the students together as a group.
  • Ask them if they have ever used money, and if so what they used it for. Take responses by raised hands.
  • Show students a penny and ask them what it is called. Take responses by raised hands.
  • Ask students if they know how much a penny is worth. Take responses by raised hands, then tell students that a penny is equal to one cent, and 100 pennies make one dollar.
  • Ask students what they think they could purchase with one penny.
  • Tell the students that today they will be counting pennies.
