Cooking Up Blends
Have students “cook” the right blends to make a fantastic word dish with beginning, middle, and ending letter sounds. In this lesson, your students will practice recognizing common CVC words.

Introduction
(5 minutes)- Begin the lesson by discussing tricky words. Potential discussion questions include:
- Have you ever read words from books or comics that you did not know how to say?
- Have you ever tried to say a word but did not know how to sound it out?
- Explain to students that they will learn and recognize sight words through letter recognition, letter sounds, and blending.
Beginning
- Pair students with another student who speaks the same home language (L1) to share.
Intermediate
- Provide examples of tricky words from a familiar text or big book as a visual to reference during the conversation.
- Display sentence starters for students to utilize as they share aloud.
