Learning Objectives
Students will be able to compare two three-digit numbers at a time using the >, <, or = signs to record their answers.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Give students a short number comparison problem to introduce them to the lesson. For example: My brother and I went bowling over the weekend. I scored 105 points and he scored 131 points.
- Ask your students who won and have them explain their answers.
- Tell students that today they will be learning how to compare three-digit numbers by using <, >, or = to show their answers.
Beginning
- Show students an online image of someone bowling to provide context.
- Define important words in the story problem in student's home language (L1) (e.g. scored, bowling, points, won).
Intermediate
- Have students think-pair-share what the problem is asking using sentence frames (e.g.The problem is asking who ________.)
- Encourage students to detail the process they used to figure out who won. Provide sentence frames, such as:
- You scored ________.
- Your brother scored ________.
- ________ is greater than ________ so ________ won.
