Blooming Numbers

Numbers are blooming! In this flower-themed lesson, students will create a piece of math artwork that will help them practice recognition of numbers through ten.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to recognize and name numbers 1 through 10. Students will be able to count and combine petals of flowers to name the total. Students will be able to write numbers 1 through 10.

Introduction

(5 minutes)
  • Introduce the lesson with a counting warm-up.
  • Using the Flower Counting worksheet, invite the students to say the number and then to count out the exact number, circling the total.

Beginning

  • Allow students to count in their home language (L1).
  • Point out the number on the worksheet, saying it aloud. Have the students repeat the number after you.
  • Model counting the flowers, inviting the students to echo count after you.

Intermediate

  • Practice counting either chorally or echo counting to review numbers 1–10.
  • Have the students turn and talk to share the number name with a partner.
  • Chorally count the flowers on the worksheet as a group.
