Our Take: Fifth graders can be very active readers. While reading grade-level text, they should pause to reflect and uncover the meaning of the text. Identifying the mood, theme, or main idea of a text and making connections to their life and the world around them are good ways that students can exemplify their reading skills. Reading comprehension passages serve to strengthen this skill set.
