New Year's Eve Hats
New Year's Eve hats let you wear your celebratory spirit on your head. New Year's is an excellent time to celebrate with silly New Year's Eve hats. This is an easy project that you can make from simple materials you’ll already have in your craft cupboard. You and your child will create a headband with pop-up numbers that spell out the coming New Year's date! Make New Year's Eve hats with year child to ring in the New Year in style.
What You Need:
- Colorful construction paper
- Pencil
- Printer paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- White glue and glitter (optional)
- Computer with a word processing program
What You Do:
- First, use a sewing tape measure to measure the circumference of your child’s head (or whomever will be wearing the headband).
- If the length for the headband is longer than one sheet of construction paper, glue two pieces together by overlapping the edges slightly.
- From your computer, use a word processing program to type large numbers for the new year – 2010. Use a bold font, and use your rulers tool to make the font size as wide as the length of 1/3 the circumference of the headband. Basically, you want the numbers large enough to pop up and be readable on the headband, but not so large they go all the way around your head.
- Print the numbers, and help your child cut them out to be used as stencils.
- On your construction paper, measure a band of two inches from the bottom of the paper. Draw a line at this height in pencil.
- Place the numbers above the headband line that you just measured. Tape them in place and draw around them using the stencils. Then, cut out the band and cut around the numbers, so you have a band with the silhouettes of the numbers sticking up.
- If you want, you can decorate the headband further. Remove the stencil shapes and use glitter, markers, or paint to add color and pizazz to your headband.
- Tape the headband in place around your child’s head for New Year’s!
Come New Year's Eve, you'll have a festive hat to celebrate the ringing-in of 2013!
