Wooden Doll Craft
Why would you pay for pricey dolls at the store when your second grader can create and play with her own personalized set? Grab a few art supplies and get ready for an afternoon of creativity, imagination and fun! After your child is finished making her wooden dolls, she can use them to decorate her room or act out a story.
What You Need:
- Wooden spools
- Small craft sticks
- Fabric pieces
- Googly eyes
- Puff balls,
- Foam stickers
- Construction paper
- Yarn
- Glue
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Place your spools on a table or work surface. These will be the bodies of your dolls.
- Gather your fabric pieces and have your child decide what pattern or print she wants to use as the “clothes” for her dolls.
- Measure the width of the spool you are using and cut a piece of fabric that is the same width. Make sure the fabric is also long enough to wrap entirely around the spool without leaving too much excess fabric.
- Place a small amount of glue on your fabric and wrap it tightly around the wooden spool. Hold it in place until it sets. Pick a fabric that represents who you want the doll to be: man, woman, child, etc.
- Now for the head. Take a large puff ball and glue it to the top of the spool. If you don’t have any puff balls, try using a cotton ball instead.
- Dress and decorate accordingly. Use yarn for hair, use a drop of glue to attach googly eyes and a mouth. You can cut foam stickers into shapes like a tie or a purse.
- Glue a small craft stick to the back of the spool to make arms.
- It's play time! Encourage your child to add more details to her dolls as she plays with them. Maybe she can even give some of the dolls hair cuts with a pair of scissors!
