Van Gogh Landscapes

What You Need:

• White drawing paper
• Pencil
• Oil pastels

What You Do:

1. Invite your child to learn more about Vincent van Gogh by heading to your local library or researching his artwork online. Encourage him to take a closer look at his outdoor landscapes depicting the harvesting of crops.
2. A landscape has a foreground, middle ground, and background. See if your child can locate the foreground, middle ground, and background in one of van Gogh’s landscapes.
3. Now offer your child a sheet of white paper and a pencil and invite him to create a sketch depicting a field or farm in fall using the pencil lightly.
4. Next, offer your child a set of oil pastels and encourage him to create strong, vibrant lines in his harvest oil pastel. He can take another look at van Gogh’s artwork for inspiration if needed!
5. Encourage your child to think of his color choices, using ones that best fit with the autumn season, such as oranges, browns, reds, and yellows.
6. Offer your child a paper towel to blend and smooth the oil pastels together, finishing the unique artwork. Find a special spot for displaying the artwork for others to see!
