Valentine's Day Pop-Up Card
Help your young artist get creative with a fun 3-D paper art project. Pop-up cards are popular and a Valentine’s Day card is easy to make. All your budding paper engineer needs is a few supplies to construct this lovely card.
What You Need:
- Heavy white paper (not card stock but heavier than printer paper)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Crayons
- Optional: Construction paper, foil pipe cleaners, tape, and glitter glue.
What You Do:
- The most basic Valentine’s Day pop up is a three-dimensional heart that stands out from the card when the card is opened. To make this kind of pop-up, have your child cut out a rectangular piece of heavy white paper down so it's the desired size and fold the paper in half.
- On the crease, use the pencil to draw a heart. Tell your child that this pencil line is the cutting line, but not to cut the entire length of the line or it will be a heart cut-out instead of a heart pop-up.
- Ask your child to erase about ¼ of the line at the outermost edge of the lobe and cut along the remaining pencil line.
- Have your child fold the card closed. The heart should “pop out.” If it doesn't, ease it forward with your fingertip. Once the card is closed, heavily crease the folded lines.
- Encourage your child to reopen the card and decorate the heart. Do not use glue or heavy paint over the folds. If glue or heavy paint is used, the card might not open and close or the glue will crack and flake when the card is opened and closed.
