Upcycled Jewelry
Upcycle old paint chip samples from hardware stores or paint shops to create beautiful, funky pieces of custom-made jewelry! It requires basic elements of jewelry, scissors and imagination to create memorable necklaces and earrings. The paint chips add color, while imagination will lead to a variety of shapes and patterns.
What You Need:
- Paint sample chips from a paint or hardware store
- Scissors, or craft knife
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Hole punch
- Earring hooks
- Jumper rings
- Necklace chain
- Chain clasp
- Pliers
What You Do:
- Have your child start with either the earrings (earring hooks and 2 jumper rings) or necklace (chain, clasp and jumper rings) first. Set the other materials to the side.
- Find two circular objects (like vitamin bottle caps) that can be traced to create shapes for the earrings.
- Have your child trace the caps over the colors of paint chips they choose, tracing two small circles and two medium circles. Then, cut along the lines so they have a total of four circles for both earrings.
- Have her line up a small circle with a medium circle so they both touch at the top. Make a hole punch through both circles. Repeat this for the second set of circles.
- Help your child use pliers to open the jump rings. Have her slide a set of hole-punched paint chips through each jump ring, then attach one jump ring to each earring hook.
- Close the jump ring to finish the earrings.
- Time to create the necklace! Have her attach the chain clasp to the necklace chain.
- Encourage her to experiment with cutting out a variety of shapes on the paint chips.
- Just like she did with the earrings, she will draw her shapes and cut them out with scissors or a craft knife.
- She can use the hole punch to make holes in the shapes depending on how she wants them to hang on the necklace.
- Have her attach the jump rings to her hole-punched paint chips before attaching the jump rings to the necklace. She can continue experimenting with this process until her necklace is complete.
