Tu B'Shevat
Tu B'Shevat is a minor Jewish holiday during which the "new year" for trees is celebrated. It coincides with the time when the earliest-blooming trees in Israel being to awaken from their winter slumber and start a new cycle of preparing to bear fruit. Your child can celebrate Tu B'Shevat by creating a pot for planting spices, parsley, or any other small seedling plant.
What You Need:
- Small terra cotta pot
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Small pebbles
- Soil
- Seeds, or seedlings
What You Do:
- Discuss with your child what Tu B'Shevat is about. Ask him if he has any trees he enjoys seeing bloom. Inquire what types of fruits he likes to eat.
- Have him paint a tree or bloom on the terra cotta pot using acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- Ask him to place a small amount of pebbles in the pot, covering the bottom.
- Fill the pot with soil.
- Have him dig a small hole with his finger and plant seeds, or a seedling.
- Lightly water the soil and place the pot in a warm window with plenty of sunlight. Water the plant as the soil starts to dry.
