Rules of the Road Signs

What You Need:

• Paper
• Poster board
• Scissors
• Markers
• Bicycles
• Friends with bicycles

What You Do:

1. Help your child and their friends cut out pieces of poster board the same size as a license plate.
2. Show them images of license plates from various states in the United States, and have them pick out a few different states. They can either draw state license plates, or invent their own license plates on pieces of poster board.
3. Encourage them to draw a few different traffic signs on sheets of paper. Some ideas are: Caution, Yield, Stop, and One-Way. They can also invent their own if they like.
4. Show the kids your driver's license. Help them to make their own "official" driver's licenses using the poster board. Have them write "Driver's License" at the top, and write information such as their name, birth date, age and address. On the right side of the license, they should draw a small self-portrait.
5. After everyone is finished, have them hang their signs all around the backyard. Make sure everyone knows what they mean.
6. Tape a paper license plate to the back of each bicycle. Make sure that the kids have a copies of their driver's licenses in their pockets.
7. Time to hit the road! Have the kids follow the rules of the road and watch the signs as they drive.
