Tie-Dye Cupcakes
Making tie-dye cupcakes is hands-down the most delicious way to learn about the colors of the rainbow. Teach or review colors with your child while creating an impressive treat that will brighten up the whole kitchen. With the magic of food coloring and your favorite cake mix, you’ll have a technicolor dessert fit for any occasion. So Groovy!
What You Need:
- Vanilla or white cupcake mix
- Paper cupcake liners
- Food coloring
- 7 bowls
- 7 small spoons
- Marshmallow fluff
- Mini M&M’s
- Gold coins (optional)
What You Do:
- Help your child prepare the cake batter according to directions on the box.
- Divide the batter evenly between the seven small bowls, and add a different color of the rainbow to each one. This is a great time to teach kids that you can mix colors to get complimentary colors like green (blue + yellow), orange (red + yellow) and purple (blue + red). Mix each colored batter well.
- Start spooning the batter into the paper cupcake liners. Go through the rainbow sequence backwards so violet begins at the bottom and red is the last color put on top. Try to evenly space the layers without mixing or blending colors. Leave at least ¼” at the top so there's room for the batter to expand.
- Bake the cupcakes according to the recipe on the box. When they are done allow them to cool completely.
- Once the cupcakes have cooled, scoop a cloud of marshmallow fluff onto the top of the cupcake.
- Sprinkle a small amount of colorful mini M&M’s on top of the marshmallow fluff.
- If you’re making St. Patrick’s cupcakes and want a little luck of the Irish, press a gold coin into the top of the cupcake!
