Thankful Turkey
We all know Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks—it's right there in the name. But with all the tasty food and holiday prep taking place, sometimes it's hard to remember that lesson. Give your child an artistic way to keep their list of thanks in mind this Thanksgiving with the thankful turkey.
What You Need:
- Flat plastic foam circle
- Brown construction paper
- Red construction paper
- White construction paper
- Orange construction paper
- Yellow construction paper
- Glue
- Pencil
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Have your child place the foam circle on the brown construction paper.
- Let your child use a pencil to trace the circle on the brown construction paper. This will be the turkey's body.
- Help your child use a pencil to add a turkey head to the circle. The shape should be similar to a tombstone or semicircle.
- Have your child cut out the entire turkey from the brown construction paper.
- Let your child use glue to attach the paper turkey body to the flat foam circle.
- While the turkey body is drying, help your child cut out two small eyes from the white construction paper, a beak from the orange construction paper and a snood (the red skin that hangs from turkeys' beaks) from red construction paper.
- Have your child draw two turkey legs and feet on the brown construction paper.
- Help your child cut out the feet—those little claws are tough to cut around.
- Have your child cut out feathers from the red, yellow and orange construction paper. your child should have at least three feathers of each color.
- Get your child to glue the feathers to the turkey body.
- Have your child think about what they're most thankful for this year. Are there any friends or family members your child appreciates? Talk to your child about all the things we are lucky to have—like health and yummy food and loving pets.
- Once your child's finished brainstorming, let your child write down each thing they're thankful for on a turkey feather.
- Run out of feathers? No problem! The more things your child is thankful for, the better. Just help your child cut out more feathers. A thankful turkey with many feathers is the happiest turkey of them all.
