Activity
Summer Words
Create a sun-shaped summer words chart in this DIY craft activity! In this art project, learners will design a cheery yellow sun featuring summer vocabulary words on the sunbeams. A vocabulary sorting activity built into the project's steps offers extra word practice. Designed for first through fifth graders, this summer vocabulary sun can be displayed (and reviewed!) all summer long.
What You Need:
- polystyrene foam circle
- Scissors
- Yellow paint
- Black marker
- Summer vocabulary list
- Paint brush
- White poster board
- Place mat
- Knife
What You Do:
- Put the place mat beneath the polystyrene foam circle.
- Have your child paint the top and sides of the polystyrene foam circle yellow.
- Set it aside to dry.
- Turn the polystyrene foam circle over and let your child paint that side yellow as well.
- Set it aside to dry again.
- This step is all you. Carefully make a shallow cut along the center side of the polystyrene foam circle.
- Don't let your child put away the paint just yet! Have your child paint the poster board yellow.
- Let your child use scissors to cut triangles from the poster board. Your child should make at least thirty yellow triangles.
- Have your child write one word from their summer vocabulary list on about half of the yellow triangles.
- Without your child peeking, write random vocabulary words on the rest of the triangles. These words should have nothing to do with summer.
- Put all the triangles on the table.
- Let your child stick only the summer words into the side of the polystyrene foam circle.
- As your child places each "sunbeam" into the circle, quiz your child on the word's definition.
