Activity
Make a Summer Snow Globe
Who says snow globes are just for winter? Making a summer snow globe is a fun, hands-on way for kids to celebrate the seasons, and flex their creativity at the same time.
Grade:
Subjects:
Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- Cardboard (try reusing a side of a cereal, cracker, or shoe box)
- Construction paper
- Clear drying, non-toxic glue
- Markers or tempera paint and a paintbrush
- Glitter
- Cellophane or clear plastic wrap
- Scissors
- Family photos
What You Do:
- Help your child trace and cut a large circle from a piece of cardboard. This will be the background for her snow globe.
- Have her cut out different shapes she'd like to include. Encourage her to think about the summer season and the shapes that go with it. Does she want flowers, trees, the ocean?
- Don't forget to bring out those family photos! Encourage her to pick a few pictures of herself to add a special touch to her summer scene.
- When she's done cutting out her shapes and photos, have her glue them onto the cardboard circle, and add in extra details with tempera paints or markers. Set aside to dry.
- Cut a piece of cellophane or plastic wrap large enough to easily wrap around the circle with room to spare.
- Have her sprinkle a small pile of glitter in the center of the artwork. Immediately place the cellophane on top of the glitter, and wrap it around to the back of the cardboard circle.
- Secure the cellophane using glue and tape. You're all done!
Shake the "snow globe" to watch the glitter float over the summer picture, simulating a rainy day!
