String Jewelry
Combine winter charm with DIY fashion to create this lovely piece of jewelry. Using a few artsy string tricks and a simple nickel, your child can make a one-of-a-kind bracelet to celebrate the chilly season.
What You Need:
- Bulletin board
- Nickels
- Pins
- Heavy string
- Fabric glue
- Paint brush
- Needle
- Thread
- Felt
- Button
- Sewing scissors
What You Do:
- Have your child place a nickel on her bulletin board
- Let her outline the nickel with eight evenly spaced pins.
- Help her tie the string to one of the pins.
- To create a snowflake pattern, show her how to stretch and wrap the string back and forth across the nickle until every pin has been wrapped.
- When she is done, have her tie the string around the final pin.
- Let her use a paint brush to coat the string with fabric glue. Make sure she gets glue into all the nooks and crannies of the snowflake.
- Have your child repeat this process to make at least two more string snowflakes.
- After she has finished making all her snowflakes, let her leave them to dry overnight.
- When the glue has dried, help her gently remove each snowflakes from its pins
- Let her use scissors to trim any excess thread.
- Help her measure and cut a strip of felt to serve as her bracelet's base.
- Have her sew the snowflakes onto the bracelet. (If she's not comfortable with sewing, a hot glue gun will work just as well.)
- For the final addition, she needs to make a way to hold her bracelet closed. Have her sew (or glue) the button on one end of the felt strip
- Then help her cut a button-hole slit -- just longer than the button -- on the other end. The bracelet can now be buttoned closed.
