Activity
Make a State Symbol Collage
Want a fun way to reinforce your child's study of state history in school? Here's a simple activity that will challenge her to put her studies to the test by creating a cute state keepsake. This collage of important state symbols makes a perfect montage to her home and a pretty display piece for her bedroom wall. She'll strengthen her online research skills—a necessity for future learning—as she gets more familiar with her home state.
What You Need:
- Internet access
- Color printer
- Blank paper
- Marker
- Glue stick
What You Do:
- Talk to your child about your state’s symbols. This is a good way to figure out what she already knows and challenge her to find out more significant information.
- If your child isn't familiar with online research, show her some ways she can find out state information online. Help her bookmark a couple helpful search engines as well as an online encyclopedia. Once she gets started, invite her to do some research on her own, but check on her regularly.
- Challenge your child to find as many state symbols as she can. Encourage her to go beyond determining the state flower and bird; there's a lot more interesting information to be found out. Give her a couple of lesser-known research suggestions, such as finding out the state animal, state song, or how the state got its name.
- When she finds a state symbol, she should print out a picture representing it.
- Once she's done researching and printing out images, encourage her to use them to create a collage. Make sure she includes the name of the symbol next to the picture in the college. The collage can cover multiple pages, depending on the number of symbols she was able to find.
