Soda Can Jewelry
Teach your child how to accessorize the environmental way! By crafting jewelry from old soda cans, they'll create a fabulous piece of art that simultaneously promotes the benefits of recycling.
What You Need:
- Soda cans
- Ribbon (or jewelry chain)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Water
- Dish soap
- Paint (optional)
What You Do:
- Help your child yank the pop tabs off the soda cans. They'll want at least six of these pop tabs.
- Let them use water and a small amount of dish soap to clean each pop tab.
- Show your child how to use the sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the pop tabs. They won't want any part their new jewelry poking them while they're wearing it!
- Does your child want to make a bracelet or a necklace? Help them use the measuring tape to figure out how long they'll want to make the piece of jewelry.
- Have them use scissors to cut the ribbon to at least twice the desired length of the piece of jewelry. (It needs to be significantly longer so that they'll have room to weave it in and out of the pop tabs.
- Help them weave the pop tabs together with the length of ribbon. Make sure to leave some ribbon on both ends of the chain.
- When they're done, let them tie the ends together to form a bow.
- Have them put on the necklace or bracelet to flaunt the trendy, earth-friendly fashion!
Your child can also make earrings to go with the necklace or bracelet! Simply have them attach the soda pop tabs to a couple of ear wires and jump rings—available online or at any local craft store.
