Activity
Make a Snowflake Headband
Your child can create a special winter headband with the help of some white felt and a length of silver ribbon. Along with creating a pretty headband, your child will hone their cutting skills. They'll be proud to wear their snowflake headband or make one to give as a gift for a special friend!
What You Need:
- 1 yard of 2-inch thick silver ribbon
- Ruler
- White and light blue felt
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Glitter
What You Do:
- Start by inviting your fourth-grader to measure one yard of two-inch thick silver ribbon using a ruler.
- Have them use white felt just like a piece of paper to cut out a snowflake for their headband. They can use a ruler to measure a 2- by 2-inch square to use for their snowflake and then cut out with a scissors.
- Invite your child to fold their square in half creating a triangle, and then in half again. Now they can carefully cut around the edges of the felt. It’s a bit thick, but encourage your child to work slowly – honing their concentration and fine motor skills!
- Encourage them to cut out a few more snowflakes of different sizes or colors to adorn their headband. Now they can arrange the snowflakes on the ribbon deciding on their final design.
- When they're ready, help by getting a hot glue gun warmed up and offer assistance as needed attaching the felt snowflakes to the ribbon. They can overlap the snowflakes, or have them arranged on their own.
- Before wearing their headband, they can add a couple of drops of glue and sprinkles of glitter.
- Now they can wrap the ribbon around their head and tie at the back! These snowy headbands are a fun way to share the winter spirit and can be given to friends as gifts!
