Service Ribbons
Service ribbons are small ribbons that are adhered to metal bars and are often attached to the jackets of people who have previously served, or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. They are generally worn in place of medals for a variety of heroic deeds and services that a military officer accomplished while serving his or her country. On holidays such as Veterans Day, military personnel will oftentimes wear their ribbons to display their accomplishments. Using construction paper, your child will create this service ribbons project in celebration of Veterans Day. The finished craft will serve as a cover to a fictional short story he will write about a member of the U.S. military who was awarded the service ribbons.
What You Need:
- Construction paper
- Glue stick
- Paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Ask your child to look at some images online of service ribbons which have been awarded to various members of the U.S. Armed Services.
- Have him write down a list of ideas for creating his own service ribbons. What could they represent?
- Encourage him to invent his own service ribbons and assemble them on a sheet of construction paper. Glue them in place.
- On a separate sheet of paper, ask him to create a story of a soldier who was awarded all of these service ribbons and what he or she did to earn them. This should be a short story with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
